An exclusion zone is a zone established by a sanctioning body to prohibit specific activities in a specific geographic area. These zones are created for control of populations for safety, crowd control, or military purposes, or as a border zone, and they may be temporary or permanent.
The planet's most famous exclusion zone resulted from an incident at a Nuclear Power station. Twenty-Five years on from the explosion within the core of Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Power Plant, a second nuclear exclusion zone was created following the meltdown triggered by a Tsunami at Fukushima on the east coast of Japan.
However, exclusion zones aren't restricted to nuclear incidents. The forces of nature and hostility of man can also lead to areas once open to the public being fenced off behind barbed wire and "No Entry" signs, The people of Montserrat and Varosha can testify to that.
excusionzones.com is a portal to these places, as well as to others less well known, but equally important in their own way.
